There are objects you buy, and then there are objects that carry stories. At Svarn Studio, every brass piece we create belongs to the second kind — shaped by hands that have inherited a tradition stretching back five centuries.
At the heart of our craft is Meenakari — the ancient Indian art of enamelling metal surfaces with vivid, intricate patterns. If you've ever held a Svarn vase or idol and wondered about the luminous colours woven into the brass, this is their story.
What is Meenakari?
Meenakari (मीनाकारी) is a traditional craft of decorating metal — most often gold, silver, or brass — with coloured enamel. The word meena derives from the Persian word for enamel, and the craft itself was brought to Rajasthan by Persian artisans during the Mughal era in the 16th century.
Over generations, Indian craftsmen absorbed and transformed the technique, making it distinctly their own. Today, Jaipur remains the heartland of Meenakari, where master artisans — called meenakars — continue to practise this art with the same devotion as their ancestors.
How It's Made
Creating a single Meenakari piece is a labour of patience and precision:
- Base preparation — A brass surface is carefully shaped, cleaned, and prepared to receive the enamel
- Engraving — Intricate patterns are hand-engraved into the metal, creating channels that will hold the enamel colours
- Colour filling — Powdered glass mixed with metallic oxides is carefully filled into the engraved grooves by hand
- Firing — The piece is fired in a kiln at high temperatures, fusing the enamel permanently into the metal
- Finishing — The surface is polished to reveal the final design in all its brilliance
Each colour requires a separate firing. A piece with five colours has been through the kiln five times — which is why no two Meenakari pieces are ever exactly alike.
Meenakari at Svarn Studio
At Svarn Studio, we work with artisans who have practised Meenakari for generations. Every vase, planter, bowl, and idol in our collection carries their fingerprints — literally and figuratively.
We believe that a home decorated with handcrafted objects is a home that tells a story. When you place a Svarn brass vase on your shelf, you're not just adding décor — you're preserving a living tradition.
